The work cookie, comes from the Dutch word, "Koekju," a diminutive of "Koek". meaning cake. And that's what the first cookies actually were - small portions of cake batter used to test oven heat before the cake itself went in to bake. I can still remember my grandmother doing the same thing with the first cookie of the batch. We waited with anticipation to see who would get that first one!
