2 apples, pared and sliced
1/2 cup water, boiling
1 small whole onion
2 Tbs. butter or bacon drippings
1/2 tsp. salt
2 Tbs. vinegar

Add shredded cabbage and sliced apples to boiling water.  Stick cloves into small onion and add to cabbage.  Cover and cook until tender (about 15 minutes).  Remove onion and cloves.  Add butter, salt, and vinegar just before serving.
